My father-in-law, Tom Hillshafer and I are working on an electric vehicle conversion. We are converting a '96 Toyota Tercel into a battery and motor electric car and our base requirements are a 50 mile round-trip range targeting high-way speeds up to 70 mph. Not sure if we'll hit these targets, but worth a shot.
We've already purchased a Motor. It is from Advanced D.C. Motors and is a FB1-001, 9.1 inch diameter, 19.5 horsepower, and 74-144v single shaft. Horsepower from electric motors doesn't compare apples-to-apples with gas engines because they are measured differently. The change in performance with a targeted 600 amp controller should be higher low-end torque than the original motor and with it's sweet spot in the 5000 RPM range we probably won't take it past 3rd gear (but will figure that out on the road).

ReplyDeleteHi!
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking (hard!) about converting my '98 tercel to electric. What has had me scared to most so far is the fact that I have to get a custom coupler and adapter for the engine to the transmission.
I was wondering if it would be possible to get your machinist to build one for me too? I guess the second must be much easier than getting my local machinist to build his first one..
Thanks!
Simon

We provided specs to the machinist for our motor (Tom has years of experience as a machinist and I have training as a mechanical engineer so the blueprints weren't too bad).

Hi Simon
I'm Tom.Jeff is my son-in -law. We designed the adapter for our car together and went through a shop called Ragsdale Industries Inc. my contact was Mark Woelfel 303-781-8234. You are more than welcome to the prints we drew for this but be aware we still had some clearance issues and still had to do some minor modifications, also there is the difference of year of the vehicle, don't know if there would some discrepancies in designs or not, wouldn't want you to waste your money. Perhaps you may consider the folks in Thornton who specialize in E.V. adapters. They are PD&Mfg, Inc. Joel Cox is who you would want to talk to at 303-288-8120 or Joel@pdmusa.com I believe you would have much better luck with them than to rip your hair out with what Jeff and I designed.Just a thought. let us know what you decide and best of luck.
Oh by the way I have an engine hoist you can borrow if you don't want to spend money on rental.
